England slipped to an embarrassing ten-wicket defeat against India in the first ODI at the Oval after getting bowled out for just 110, with Jasprit Bumrah the star of the show for the visitors.
New England white-ball captain Jos Buttler was able to welcome back Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root and Ben Stokes after their success playing 'Bazball'. As a result, England lined up with five members of the top six that played in their 2019 World Cup final win, with Liam Livingstone replacing the recently retired Eoin Morgan.
However, England's big hitters spectacularly failed to make an impact with four members of their top six getting out for nought, just the sixth time that has happened to any side in 4,421 ODIs. After winning the toss and choosing to bowl, India reduced England to 30-5 in the powerplay, with Bumrah leading the way as he took career best figures of 6-19.
The 28-year-old is one of the best bowlers in the world and his quality was on show for all to see as he found some big swing with the new ball. In a scintillating opening spell, Bumrah picked up four massive wickets in the powerplay, removing Jason Roy, Root, Bairstow and Livingstone for a combined seven runs.
Buttler did offer some resistance for England, top scoring with 30, but holed out off Shami after top-edging a pull shot. And when Craig Overton was bowled by Shami for eight, England were facing the prospect of recording their lowest-ever ODI total - less than a month after blasting a world-record 498.
England's lowest ODI total came back in 2001 when they were bowled out for just 86 by Australia at Old Trafford. They were able to avoid breaking an unwanted record thanks to a useful stand of 35 by David Willey and Brydon Carse, which moved England past 100.
However, Bumrah returned and quickly wrapped up the innings, with all-time great Sachin Tendulkar lauding him as the best all-format bowler in the world. "The Oval pitch has great bounce but Indian bowlers bowled the right lengths & that made all the difference," Tendulkar tweeted.
"A great bowling performance by India's pace attack especially Bumrah who was just phenomenal. I've been of the opinion for a while now that Bumrah is the best bowler across formats."
In response, India knocked off the runs inside just 19 overs, with captain Rohit Sharma striking his 45th ODI half-century. In partnership with Shikhar Dhawan, India completed a crushing victory without losing a single wicket.
Having already lost the T20I series 2-1, Buttler's reign has not got off to a great start. However, England have plenty of white-ball talent in their ranks and will be hoping for an immediate response in the second ODI at Lord's in just two days time.
