England facing fan backlash over pricing of new kit for home women’s European Championship

England are facing a backlash from fans over the pricing of the new women’s kit to be worn at this summer’s European Championship.

The Lionesses, who are among the favourites for the home tournament which gets underway on July 6, have released a new all-white home kit alongside a “bold crimson” away strip.

The most expensive versions of both adult shirts come in at £114.95, with an alternative ‘stadium’ edition available at £74.95, while the cheapest children’s shirt is priced at £59.95.

The standard prices are similar to those charged for the men’s kits ahead of their Euros last summer - though the stadium shirt has risen by around £5 - but in the midst of a worsening cost of living crisis, many fans on social media reacted with dismay.

The tournament is expected to be a landmark event for women’s sport in this country, with a number of matches, including the opener between England and Austria at Old Trafford and the final at Wembley, already sold out.

An impact report released by consultancy firm EY this week said the competition was on course to be the biggest women’s sporting event in European history, with total attendances likely to be more than double the 240,000 that watched the last Euros in the Netherlands in 2017.
