Harry Kane missed a decisive penalty as England crashed out of the World Cup at the hands of France at the Al Bayt Stadium.
Aurélien Tchouaméni struck on 17 minutes to give France a deserved lead, rattling home an unstoppable drive from 30 yards, following a typically slick French counter-attack, but the defending champions struggled to build on their early advantage.
England were left screaming for a penalty when Kane was clipped by Dayot Upamecano as he cut into the box from the right. But, after a VAR check, his protests were waved away.
But referee Wilton Sampaio did point to the spot just after half-time, after Bukayo Saka was brought down by France goalscorer Tchouaméni.
Kane made no mistake, powering his spot kick confidently into the top corner, to restore parity and put his side's tails up.
Harry Maguire saw a header brush past the post 20 minutes from time, but the game would soon swing back in France's direction.
A pinpoint cross found Olivier Giroud, who rose beyond Maguire to head home.
France were jubilant, but England were presented with a golden opportunity to level again late on after Mason Mount was bundled over in the box.
Kane stepped up again, but this time blazed his penalty high over the bar to leave their World Cup dreams in tatters.
France will now face Morocco in the semi-finals.
