England collapse to series defeat vs India despite Richard Gleeson's brilliant debut

India have wrapped up a series win over England after following up their dominant victory in the first T20I with a 49-run win in the second, despite Richard Gleeson's stunning debut.

Gleeson has had a long and difficult journey to the top, having not made his professional debut until he was 27 and then struggling with a back problem which limited him to just three T20 appearances for Lancashire over the past two years.

However, all the struggles were worth it as he picked up 3-15 on his international debut, taking the big wickets of global superstars Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant. At 34, he is England's oldest debutant since Paul Nixon in 2007 and he made an instant impact after Rohit and Pant had powered India to 43-0 off the first four overs.

He removed the India captain in his first over for 31, with Rohit top edging a pull shot and getting caught by Buttler. Gleeson then delivered an outstanding double-wicket maiden to dismiss Kohli for just one and Pant for 26.

However, despite the best efforts of Gleeson and Chris Jordan, who followed up his excellent 2-23 at the Rose Bowl with a superb 4-27 at Edgbaston, England's batting collapsed after a brilliant team performance from India with the ball.

After Ravindra Jadeja's crucial unbeaten 46 propelled India to 170-8, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah and Yuzvendra Chahal helped the visitors bowl England out for just 121. England's innings got off to a horror start when Jason Roy was dismissed for a golden duck by Kumar off the very first ball of the innings and they ended the powerplay 36-3.

Kumar had Buttler caught behind for just four in his second over, before Bumrah bowled Liam Livingstone for 15 to leave England in serious trouble. Harry Brook, once again preferred over Phil Salt to fill the vacancy left by Eoin Morgan's international retirement, managed just eight off nine balls and holed out off leg-spinner Chahal.

Dawid Malan then fell for 19, reverse sweeping Chahal straight to Harshal Patel, while Sam Curran holed out off Bumrah for just two. Moeen Ali did his best to try and give his side a chance but when he was caught for 35 off Hardik Pandya, England's hopes disappeared with him.

Jordan was run out in embarrassing fashion for one, Gleeson skied a simple catch to Kohli for two and Matt Parkinson was bowled for a duck, with England falling 49 runs short of India's total.
