England boss Gareth Southgate gives injury update on Manchester United's Harry Maguire

Manchester United's Harry Maguire is set to be available for England's match against the United States of America.

Maguire started in England's opening match against Iran at the World Cup on Monday afternoon and he came close to scoring with a powerful header at a corner before assisting Bukayo Saka, who made it 2-0, just before the break at half-time.

England eventually won the game 6-2, but Maguire was brought off in the 70th minute, shortly after Iran scored their first. Maguire initially looked at fault for the goal but he went down and received treatment after England conceded.

Maguire appeared to be dazed and he was substituted off the pitch, with Eric Dier coming on to replace him at the back.

Southgate was asked about Maguire's fitness by reporters after the game and the England manager said: “Harry Maguire felt ill. [He] flagged it before the goal. There was no point carrying on but other than that no causes for concern.”

Maguire is currently fourth-choice centre-back at United but he remains in favour with Southgate for England. He's expected to start against America in the second World Cup group match on Friday and he received praise for his display against Iran.

Southgate defended his selection of Maguire in September and that loyalty has been questioned in the media, especially since the player has made just three Premier League starts this season and is down the pecking order at Old Trafford.

England's match against America will kick off at 7:00pm on Friday.
