England have announced their squads for the upcoming T20I series against Pakistan and the T20 World Cup, with opener Jason Roy a high-profile omission from both squads.
Roy has struggled for form this summer, scoring just 76 runs from 98 balls in six T20Is for England and then managing just 51 runs off 51 balls in six innings for Oval Invincibles in The Hundred. As a result, the 32-year-old has been ruthlessly axed by England.
In his absence, Dawid Malan, Phil Salt and Alex Hales are the leading candidates to replace him, with Jonny Bairstow now ruled out of the World Cup after suffering a freak injury while playing golf. Hales was later added as Bairstow's replacement.
Seamers Mark Wood and Chris Woakes are both set to make their returns against Pakistan after recovering from injuries picked up during the West Indies Test series in March. Their returns mean Richard Gleeson and Tymal Mills will only be travelling reserves at the World Cup alongside spinner Liam Dawson.
Liam Livingstone and Chris Jordan will both miss the Pakistan series as they continue to recover from injuries sustained in The Hundred, but will return for the World Cup. As a result, five uncapped players have been named in the 19-man squad that will tour Pakistan.
Will Jacks and Jordan Cox have been rewarded for their fine form with the bat in The Hundred, while Luke Wood, Tom Helm and Olly Stone bolster England's pace options. Captain Jos Buttler has admitted he is unlikely to be available until the "back end" of the Pakistan series, meaning Moeen Ali is expected to deputise for him.
England will be hoping to win the World Cup this year after being knocked out in the semi-finals by New Zealand last year and their campaign will begin on October 22 when they face Afghanistan in Perth.
Before the tournament begins, they will play seven T20Is against Pakistan from September 20th and three T20Is against defending champions and hosts Australia from October 9th.
