Engineers were forced to assess the structural safety of a key railway bridge in Manchester after a two-vehicle collision. As reported in the Manchester Evening News , Hyde Road in Gorton was closed off by police on Thursday night.
The crash is believed to have involved a taxi and a blue pick-up-style truck, which images from the scene showed was left badly damaged.
Emergency services rushed to the scene of the crash at around 9.20pm and cordoned off a stretch off the road beneath the railway bridge, near to Armitage CE Primary School and the Bennett Street junction on the opposite side of the bridge.
One casualty was taken to hospital by paramedics after the incident. In a statement today - Friday - Greater Manchester Police said thankfully, the injuries reported were 'not life-threatening'.
The force said one of the vehicles is believed to have struck the railway bridge during the collision, leading to Network Rail engineers carrying out a subsequent inspection in line with policy.
No further details have been revealed, but the road was opened later and trains were running as normal today.
In a statement, Greater Manchester Police said: "We received a report of a two-vehicle road traffic collision on Hyde Road, Manchester, at around 9:20pm on Thursday 28 July 2022. It is believed one of the vehicles crashed into the railway bridge which Network Rail are inspecting as part of their protocol.
"Enquiries are ongoing but injuries reported are not life threatening."
Ambulances were also at the scene, as well as officers from Greater Manchester Police as enquiries were carried out. Dramatic pictures of the scene showed the large blue pick-up-style vehicle, which saw its bonnet visibly crushed in the incident.
It was just earlier this month that the M.E.N. reported that residents living on Hyde Road (A57), which connects Gorton to the city centre, openly spoke of their fears that it was "too dangerous" to let children play near after a stream of serious accidents.
Speaking previously, local councillor Julie Reid told the Manchester Evening News : "I think it's a massive problem. Not just on Hyde Road but on all the other arterial roads heading into Manchester. Where drivers come off a motorway they get used to the speed and just don't slow down.
"I have definitely seen more reckless driving. You can put in all the measures in the world but we need drivers to help us and drive properly and according to the road and conditions."
Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) announced the road closure, which blocked off the busy route between Bennett Street and Redgate Lane in both directions after the incident. Fire crews also attended and helped the casualty before they were taken to hospital.
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “Just before 9.30pm this evening (28 July) firefighters were called to reports of a road traffic collision on Hyde Road, Manchester.
"Fire crews from Gorton fire station arrived quickly at the scene and assisted one casualty who was then conveyed to hospital by our colleagues at North West Ambulance Service. Crews helped to make the scene safe before leaving after being in attendance for around 40 minutes."
