Engineer's £1 hack could save you thousands as cold weather hits

Days of cold weather and wintry conditions are forecast across the UK, with temperatures set to feel as low as -3C in Liverpool.

As frost, ice, and even snow, are predicted, Toolstation is warning homeowners of one particular issue. It comes as pipes are likely to freeze up, which can cause boilers to stop working.

In some cases, this can cause thousands of pounds worth of damage. Thankfully, there is an easy hack to avoid this, and it costs around £1.

Heating Engineer at Seven Heating, Lorenzo Giove, explains just how widespread the issue can become. Mr Giove said: "During the cold weather in December, I was called and texted nearly 100 times by customers with the same issue, frozen condensate pipes.

"The condensate pipe is the external pipe which carries acidic water waste from the boiler out of the house to an external drain. When it becomes blocked with ice, your boiler stops working.” He went on to say prevention is the best option, and he would recommend doing this "as soon as possible".

A spokesperson from Toolstation told the ECHO how to do this, adding: "Pipe insulation can be purchased for less than £1. A metre length of our most affordable insulation wrap costs just 99p and its thick foam cuts heat loss by up to 70%, protecting against frost and freezing. All you need to do is wrap some insulation around the pipe.

"You may like to use cable ties to ensure it’s fastened on tightly.”
