'Energy-sucking' home appliances to watch out for - with one costing £13 a day

A hard winter is coming for many households across the UK, as families face a steep increase in energy bills in October and January.

With this adding to the pressure of the cost of living crisis, individuals are having to get savvy with the way they save their pennies this winter. However, finding out how much energy certain appliances in your home use up can be helpful in keeping your bills down.

As reported by Manchester Evening News, some appliances can even be costing as much as £13 per day to run. Energy experts at Radiators Online have shared the most energy-intensive appliances and how expensive they are to run.

Read on below to find out more about what appliances are "sucking" the energy out of your home.

Air-conditioning and heating

The experts at Radiators Online have said: "Your HVAC [Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning] system is the biggest consumer of energy in your home.

“Most HVAC systems run 24 hours a day; therefore, depending on the efficiency of your unit, on average, it may use 72kWh in a day, costing you a staggering £4,967.65 a year and £13.61 every day.”

In order to save some cash, it has been suggested to invest in a programmable thermostat. This will stop you from overspending for no reason.

They advised: "If you assumed the energy costs of running a fan are minimal, you’d be right. Consider direct current fans. They use so little energy that operating one at full speed for 24 hours a day would cost between £24.83 and £164.25 a year."

Water heating

Water heaters cost around £828.55 over the course of 12 months if used daily, according to the experts. In order to save money, heat pumps are an option.

The heat pumps use electricity to transfer heat, only using around 500 watts when heating the water in your home.

Fridge Freezer

According to Radiators Online: "A refrigerator must run 24 hours a day to keep your food fresh. This appliance needs 180 watts per hour to run, which means it requires 4.32 kWh to run for 24 hours.

“Multiplying this by 365 days at the average price per kWh, we find that your fridge is costing you £299.30 per year.”

Unfortunately there is no way to keep the energy use down on a refrigerator, unless you turn it off completely - which is no good for the food inside.

Dishwasher

Dishwashers are used mainly for convenience, but they can cost a small fortune to run on a daily basis. It takes around 1800 watts to use a dishwasher for one hour, and the average washing time can be up to two hours - using up 3600 watts of energy.

Radiators Online said: "This means it uses 3.6 kWh per average, costing you about £240.20 if used daily for a year.” So, the easiest way to save money would be to go back to the old hand-washing method.

Oven

While running an oven isn't costly to begin with, opening and closing the appliance's door can be costly. According to the experts, this can hugely affect how much electricity the oven eats up.

They said: “We estimated that an oven is used, on average, for about an hour a day. It takes about 2400 watts for an average oven to run, therefore, it requires 2.4 kWh for one hour of use and costs about £164.25 to use daily for a year.”
