Energy drinks ban for under-16s to come into force – here’s what to know

  • The government will ban the sale of energy drinks containing over 150mg of caffeine per litre to under-16s in England from April 2027.
  • Public Health Minister Sharon Hodgson stated the drinks "have no place in children 's hands", citing their detrimental impact on health and education.
  • Businesses found selling these restricted drinks in shops, via vending machines, or online will face fines of up to £2,500.
  • The legislation aims to protect the estimated 100,000 children who consume them daily, particularly those from more deprived areas.
  • The British Soft Drinks Association labelled the ban "unnecessary", arguing there is no robust evidence of widespread overconsumption or harm.
