Emmett J Scanlan set to star in final season of Derry Girls

Actor Emmett J Scanlan has revealed he is set to swap gritty crime scenes for a more comedic role as he is set to star in Derry Girls.

The final season of the hit show, created by Lisa McGee, will air later this year.

And Kin star Emmett has bagged a role in the series.

When asked what his next project is after Peaky Blinders, he said: “I’m going to be in the UK version of Call My Agent and then I got a part in the final season of Derry Girls."

He said starring in the Derry Girls wasn't "unlike Peaky Blinders" as it is "bucket-list stuff".

"Derry Girls is not unlike Peaky Blinders; it’s bucket-list stuff and to be able to team back up with Lisa McGee, who I worked with on The Deceived, is wonderful.

“She’s an extraordinary talent.”

Emmett is starring in the final series of Peaky Blinders as Billy Grade and the Dubliner said it has been a “dream come true” for him.

“It was a dream come true for me to get a part on Peaky Blinders, and to get that call to come back for the final season is even better. You know if you haven’t been killed off that there’s a chance you’ll come back, you’re never certain.

“They left the end of season five in a situation where you didn’t know who betrayed the Shelbys, who the rat was, and since Billy was one of those suspects, I thought there was a chance of returning and being part of the tapestry of what I think is one of the greatest UK shows.

“Being on that set and meeting the actors and getting to dance with their characters when the cameras are rolling is just brilliant.
“I want my career to be littered with moments like that, bucket list moments and it’s happening more and more as the years go on,” he told the RTE Guide.

The father-of-one is also celebrating after being nominated for an IFTA for his role as Jimmy in Kin.

He said the gritty RTE One crime drama has received huge recognition abroad in America and Australia.

“I’m delighted about the success of the show and the positive response to it in Ireland and abroad; Americans in particular took the show into their hearts and I’ve friends in Australia watching it at the moment.

“For me, it’s always important to invest my time into work that makes an impact, a positive impact.

“Time is the most precious thing we have so you don’t want to waste your time on sh*t work, and with Kin, I’m so proud of it and I look forward to spending time on it again.

“As for personal nomination, I’m so grateful for that, but I’m under no illusion; it’s down to the people around me and how good Kin is. I’m humbled by it.”
