Emmerdale viewers point out problem with Bernice's health storyline

Emmerdale viewers have slammed Bernice's health storyline already, just minutes after the character got her diagnosis. During this evening's episode, Bernice went to the doctors as she believed that she had early-onset dementia.

Bernice, who had booked an appointment with Manpreet, was shocked when Liam stepped out from behind the curtain. Startled at the sight of Liam - with whom she had once shared an illicit kiss - she asked: "I thought I was seeing Manpreet?" But Liam told her that Manpreet was ill.

Hesistant, Bernice said that she thought she ought to wait until Manpreet was back, but Liam was having none of it. He said: "Whatever it is, I won't be shocked - I'm a doctor." At that point, Bernice blurted out: "I think I have early-onset dementia."

However, after a swift assessment by Liam - who tested Bernice's memory - he told her that he "doubts very much" she has dementia. Instead, he told her that she is likely menopausal.

And it is safe to say that Bernice did not take the news very well. She stormed out of the surgery, but not before accusing Liam of "loving this". She said: "I bet you're loving this? Sitting there, telling me I'm a dried up old prune."

She then told him to "shove it" when he suggested that there is "help out there". And, later in the episode, while chatting to Laurel, Bernice said that she would have even preferred to have dementia.

She said: "I was hoping to god it wasn't this and now that I know it is I can't bear it." But Laurel replied: "It's not an illness", and Bernice told her that it "feels like it".

But Bernice's reaction to a perfectly natural process has angered viewers, who have accused her of being over dramatic. @surfingspaniel said: "Bernice going over the top as usual". @mikepriestley13 said: "Bernice calm down… you’re an older woman. You are going through the menopause. Live with it!!"

@BeeE2002 said: "Bernice is being ever-so-slightly melodramatic". @karmatarabuddha said: "why would dementia be preferable to menopause. Bernice, pointless character".
