Emmerdale viewers heartbroken over cruel scam plot as fears grow for Mary Goskirk's future on soap

Emmerdale fans have been left heartbroken for Mary Goskirk after she was caught up in a romance scam.

Mary's "beautiful" coming out scene touched viewers last year and left many hoping she would find her happy ever after with the right person. Her love life started to look up when she met charity worker Faye and the pair quickly hit it off and embarked on what seemed like a whirlwind romance.

Suspicions around Faye's intentions started to rise soon after once she declared she needed money to rebuild a women's shelter in Ecuador. Good-natured Mary immediately proposed to organise a fundraiser but was warned by Suzy Merton that Faye might not be who she says she is.

During tonight's dramatic showdown, Faye revealed her true colours and left Mary for dead after pushing her against a table. After realising she had been scammed all along, Mary told Faye: "I loved you. I thought you loved me."

Viewers now worry that Mary's first relationship with a woman will bring more heartbreak in the future. Taking to Twitter, they voiced their concerns.

@NinjaTHaii said: "Mary feels how I have felt in a different situation. Vulnerability is a foreign concept to strong minded woman is why it’s so hard to handle and a whole heap of women know that same feeling too."

@homemaker2799 wrote: "It would have been nice for Mary to have had a relationship first as she hid her sexuality rather than be scammed straight away now that trust has gone for her and it her sometime to share the real Mary to family and friends."

@googoogajoob78 tweeted: "Let's hope that doesn't put Mary off finding the happiness she deserves. I hate what they've done to her coming out story etc, I won't wait with baited breath for the writers to redeem themselves..."

@itzzzo_ commented: "It is sad for Mary, her first relationship where she felt like her true herself and she's been taken for a mug."

And @Crazier said: "Poor Mary, all she wanted was someone to love."
