Emmerdale Tate family tree explained after Nicky and Caleb's true identities revealed

Emmerdale fans were left gobsmacked last night after newcomers Caleb and Nicky's true identities were finally revealed in a shock twist.

It was revealed that Nicky (Lewis Cope) is actually Caleb’s (Will Ash) son but the shocking twists didn't end there. Viewers saw father and son make their way through the Emmerdale graveyard. It was intense as they reached their destination – Frank Tate’s grave and it all became clear that Frank is Caleb’s dad!

In tonight's episode of the ITV soap viewers will learn more about Caleb's real reason for being in the village and his plan to win back his birthright, Home Farm.

But for now we have taken a deep dive into the Tate family tree - when the Tate family were first introduced to Emmerdale in November 1989, viewers had no idea that they would become an integral part of the show's rejuvination.

Introduced during the same period that the show was rebranded from Emmerdale Farm to just Emmerdale, the family brought a touch of drama - and plenty of money - to the Dales.

The family, headed by patriarch Frank Tate, consisted also of his son Chris, daughter Zoe and his wife Kim - the latter two introduced in December that same year.

And Frank was the soap's first true villain, with a fiery, alcohol-fuelled temper and tendency towards spousal violence. In fact, Frank's mean streak was so violent that - in 1996 - he tried to murder Kim, but ended up killing her lookalike.

Here, the Tate family tree is explained in full following Nicky and Caleb's reveal.

Frank Tate

Frank Tate arrived in Emmerdale in November 1989 with his wife Kim, though he had previously been married to his first wife Jean. Frank and Jean had two children together, Chris Tate, born in 1963, and Zoe Tate, born in 1968.

In 1984 Jean fell ill with cancer and Frank assisted her suicide, and had been having an affair with his secretary, Kim, during her illness. After Kim had an affair with gamekeeper Neil Kinkaid in 1992, Kim and Frank divorced but reconciled in 1994, and went on to welcome son James Tate two years later.

Frank died in 1997 after suffering a heart attack when Kim came "back from dead" after she'd framed Frank for her supposed murder. Following his death, Liam Hammond came forward and revealed that he was Frank's illegitimate child, and that he was the result of an affair between Frank and an unnamed woman.

Kim Tate (née Barker)

Kim Tate is the second wife of Frank Tate and has been hailed as one of the most iconic Emmerdale characters. Kim first arrived in the village in 1989 with Frank and his kids and soon earned her name as a ruthless gold-digger.

During her time on the show she was at the centre of several dramatic storylines, including attempting murder, faking her own death and standing by while her husband died of a heart attack.

It seemed Kim didn't have many redeeming qualities but her love affair with Dave Glover brought out her softer side, until he tragically died saving Kim and Frank's baby son, James, in a fire at Home Farm. Kim returned to Emmerdale in October 2018 and is the only member of the original Tate family to remain in Emmerdale.

Chris Tate

Chris Tate was the son of Frank and Jean Tate who became resentful of his life when he was paralyzed from the waist down after a plane crash in 1993.

After divorcing first wife Kathy, Chris Tate married Rachel Hughes in 1995, shortly after they welcomed son Joseph, but Chris' growing greed for money spelled the end for the pair. Chris went on to marry Charity Dingle in 2001, and the pair welcomed son Noah in 2004, but Charity's cheating behaviour led to the deterioration of their relationship.

After learning that he had a brain tumour which was impossible to remove, Chris decided to take revenge on Charity and arranged a meeting with her where he poisoned himself in order to frame her for his murder.

Chris then died on the floor of Home Farm – in the exact same spot his dad Frank had died six years previously.

Zoe Tate

Zoe Tate is the second child and only daughter of Frank and Jean Tate. Zoe had a blessing ceremony with girlfriend Emma Nightingale in 1996, but shortly after, left her for Emma's ex girlfriend Susan Wilde.

During her time on the soap, Zoe was diagnosed with schizophrenia, had a daughter named Jean with Scott Windsor, and also had an affair with Charity, her brother's wife.

Until her departure in September 2005, Zoe was the longest-serving female character on the soap.

Joe Tate

Joseph Tate is the son of Chris Tate and Rachel Hughes and after being shipped off to boarding school as a boy, he made his return to the village in 2017 under the fake name of Tom Waterhouse.

He seduced Debbie Dingle in an attempt to exact revenge on her mum Charity, Joe's dad's ex wife, but ended up falling for Debbie in the process. Joe then bought back his childhood home of Home Farm, where he's been living ever since.

Noah Tate

Emmerdale actor Jack Downham plays Noah Dingle on the ITV soap (ITV)

Noah is the son of Charity Dingle and Chris Tate.

The teen has been seen getting close to his half brother, Joe, since his return to the Emmerdale village earlier this year.
