Emmerdale star shares set secrets and unexpected lengths bosses go to for perfect scenes

An Emmerdale guest who sent the nation into meltdown when he was compared to Harry Kane has revealed what really happens on the set.

Funeral director James Crabtree appeared on the show back in October during the joint funeral of Faith Dingle and Liv Flaherty as he carried Faith's coffin out of the village church.

But while he was a complete rookie, the businessman who also runs a local litter-picking group in his neighbourhood admits that he was blown away by the work the producers carry out.

Speaking to The Mirror, James opened up about his experience on the set of the ITV soap which is filmed in Leeds.

"In Leeds, we've got Leeds Bradford Airport and if there's a plane flying over, they cut the scene and wait for the plane to go.

"This is how precise they are, one of the chaps had different cufflinks on for a scene they did the day before and one of the props guys were going nuts because they weren't the same and fans pick up on this sort of thing."

But while many viewers question what is in the coffin during funeral scenes on TV, he explained: "It was an empty coffin, it's quite hard to have a coffin on your shoulder with nothing in it.

"When we loaded it into the carriage, we had to make it look like there was weight to it, it was crazy."

Recalling how he managed to find himself on the soap, James said: "It's an agreement [his place of work], have with Yorkshire television, they've had it for years.

"Most of the people you see in the background are extras but they occasionally use people in their professional capacity."

After the heartbreaking episode aired, viewers flocked to social media comparing James to England Capitan and Tottenham ace, Harry Kane, which he says even cast members picked up on.

"Moira, Natalie J Robb, she came up to me in between takes and said, 'I'm going to tell you something, you might have had it before but you're the spit of Harry Kane, apart from you're shorter than him but you're better looking than him'.

"They were all, Lisa Riley for example were so welcoming and polite, they were so nice, it was a really good place to work.

Sharing some behind-the-scenes secrets of the set, James added: "The bed and breakfast that Eric Pollard used to own, they used some of the buildings for scenes but most of it is now done at ITV Studios on Kirkstall Road."
