Emmerdale special looking back at its 50 years set to air

Emmerdale fans are going to be treated to a special one-off documentary celebrating the legendary soap’s glorious 50 years.

As fans know, Emmerdale will be celebrating its major milestone with a host of big storylines throughout October. This will include a special hour-long episode on Sunday, October 16 - marking the first day Emmerdale aired back in 1972.

Additionally, a documentary charting Emmerdale’s history will be screened on ITV. A spokesperson said: “This one-off special documentary celebrating 50 years of Emmerdale tells the story of how a sleepy daytime afternoon series about rural folk became the award-winning, ratings-busting, peak-time drama that it is today.

“A mixture of compelling classic Emmerdale clips and rarely seen gems will be mined from the archive for viewers to relish. From family feuds, fires and fights to more light hearted moments from life on the farm and in the village that goes by the name of - Emmerdale.

“They will feature alongside contributions from much-loved cast members, as the stars of Emmerdale past and present watch back their famous storylines to share reflections on their characters and memories from across the years. With a treasure trove of behind-the-scenes secrets and anecdotes, the acclaimed cast will remember key moments from the last five decades.”

We’ll bring you more on what to expect from the documentary when we have further details. Additionally, Emmerdale superfans can get their hands on a new book charting the last five decades of the much-loved soap.

50 Years of Emmerdale: The official Story of TV's iconic rural drama hit shelves at the end of September. It includes a delve looking back at Emmerdale legends, the show's villains, births, marriages, deaths, and celebrity cameos.

It has been produced by Emmerdale historian Tom Parfitt. It costs £20 and you can buy it from book shops and online.
