Emmerdale revealed exactly what happened when Kyle Winchester killed Al Chapman – but some fans noted an issue with it.
The ITV soap left fans reeling on Friday night when Cain Dingle ( Jeff Hordley ) revealed to a shocked Moira Dingle ( Natalie J Robb ) that Kyle was responsible for Al's death, after shooting the businessman to protect his dad Cain. In a special flashback episode tonight, viewers finally learned exactly what happened in the lead up – and during – the accidental killing.
As Cain revealed to Moira what had happened, a struggling Kyle sat down with his mum Amy Wyatt and explained exactly what had happened – and how his dad had decided to cover for him. Crying, Kyle explained how he had followed his dad to Al's meeting.
The flashback episode began with viewers being transported to a few days' previous, when an angry Cain decided to seek his revenge on Al for what he had done and encouraging Cain's sister Chas to cheat on her partner Paddy.
Seeing his dad so angry, Kyle decided to follow Cain to the barn and when he saw them fighting and both of them reaching for the gun, he decided to step in and help his dad out. As he held the gun up to face Al, both the businessman and Cain tried to reassure him everything was going to be ok as they begged him to put the gun down as slowly as he could.
He struggled and, as Al stepped towards him, he stepped back and, in a panic, he fired the gun with Al being wounded fatally.
After everything happened, Cain had originally planned to bury Al – but Kerry Wyatt, who was Al's partner as is also Kyle's grandmother, found the body and Cain had to change his plan. Finding Kyle, he told him to hide his blood stained jumper in a shed and warned him he needed to run as fast as he could back home and sneak back upstairs to his room as if nothing had happened.
Scared, Kyle did what he was told – but with Cain now pleading guilty to protect his son, he is looking at a possible life sentence. Kyle – heartbroken by it all – was desperate to tell the police what had happened to free his dad, but Amy insisted it wasn't a good idea.
Actress Natalie teased of the scenes ahead: "She has a lot of extremely difficult decisions to make. This is a fascinating story to play as there are so many twists and turns that will cause a ripple effect to other characters in the village that are not yet aware of the true circumstances. Moira, as a mother and a wife, has such a turbulent time ahead which is great as an actress to get stuck into."
Following the scenes, fans of the ITV soap took to Twitter to point out two issues with the storyline.
"How has a child as slight as Kyle fired a shotgun? He looks like he couldn't knock the skin off a rice pudding, poor kid. #Emmerdale," one wrote, as a second added: "Kerry must have taken a while to walk in #Emmerdale."
A third shared: "I am no fire arms expert... but i would very much imagine... a kid shooting a shot gun like that would of knocked Kyle completely off his feet.... and would have been a emotional wreck afterwards.. #Emmerdale," with a fourth writing: "But no gun/bullet residue on Cain? #emmerdale."
*Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7:30pm on ITV, with an hour-long episode on Thursdays.
