Emmerdale favourite quits ITV soap for Hollywood after bagging major role

Former Emmerdale actor Ben Freeman has quit the long running ITV soap after a bagging a major role in a US TV show show.

The soap star, who is best known for his role as Scott Windsor between 1998 and 2007, has landed a huge new role in the the new season of Outlander and will play the role of Corporal Woodbine, according to reports.

The casting is said to be a 'dream' for the British TV star, a source said: “It’s a great role and fans will be delighted to see him in the show. Ben’s done a lot of stage work recently and his fans will love seeing him back on screens.”

Ben is no stranger to the acting world, his first notable role was as Chris Longworth in the children's series Grange Hill, a role he portrayed from 1996 to 1998. Following this Ben landed his most recogniseable role to date as Scott Windsor in Emmerdale, taking over from previous actor Toby Cockerell.

Following his departure from the Dales Ben joined the cast of the BBC soap opera EastEnders as Caleb Malone in 2021.

In between that time Freeman took his career to the stage, playing the Prince in William Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet, Warner in the final cast of Legally Blonde and Norman in Dreamboats and Petticoats, both in West End theatre.

In 2012 he joined the cast of Wicked and was cast in the a musical version of the American sitcom Hippy Days, playing the role of The Fonz.

He has also starred in The Rocky Horror Show, where he played the role of Brad Majors. In 2019, he appeared in the BBC soap opera Doctors as Adrian Richards.

ITV Emmerdale continues to air on Mondays to Fridays on ITV1 and also on ITV X on demand and catch up, with episodes typically airing from 7.30pm til 8pm.
