Emmerdale and Coronation Street fans thrilled to spot crossover in old episode

An eagle-eyed soap fan noticed an Emmerdale and Coronation Street crossover while watching an old episode of ITV's The Royal.

Old episodes of the show, which was a spin-off from the hugely popular Heartbeat, currently airs on ITV3, and Wednesday's instalment featured stars who have since gone on to feature in some of the UK's best loved soaps.

Filmed in 2004, the episode featured Michelle Hardwick - who now plays Vanessa in Emmerdale - as Lizzie Kennoway, the hospital's receptionist.

Lizzie was seen welcoming a patient, a young, brunette woman named Ellen who complained of itchy skin.

And she had a familiar face.

Ellen was played by Georgia Taylor, who is now well-known as Toyah Battersby on Coronation Street.

Posting in a Coronation Street fans' group on Facebook, one viewer wrote: "Omg! It's Toyah on the Royal.

"And Vanessa from Emmerdale."

Other soap fans were quick to comment on the crossover.

One Corrie lover said: "This pic looks like it might fall between her stints on Corrie. She looked younger when first in Corrie."

Another said: "Loved the Royal and there were a good few actors from Coronation Street in the episodes."

A third said: "I think perhaps opportunities for Northern actors (with genuine accents) back then were more limited."

A fourth said: "I knew I recognised her face from somewhere".

Repeat episodes of The Royal air on ITV3 at 12.05am and 10.15am, and are also available on the ITV Hub.
