Emma Raducanu rehires US Open-winning coach in surprise move before Wimbledon

Emma Raducanu has turned to a blast from her past ahead of Wimbledon, rehiring Andrew Richardson as her coach.

Richardson was sat in the Briton’s box when she stunned the tennis world by winning the US Open back in 2021 as a qualifier.

Raducaunu, 18 at the time, emerged victorious at Flushing Meadows having not dropped a single set en route to the title.

She has struggled in recent years for consistent form, and has chopped and changed her coaching setups numerous times.

Most recently, she was with Rafael Nadal’s former coach Francisco Roig, but parted company with the Spaniard after six months, citing differences in on-court phiosophy.

Roig has since taken up a role with Iga Swiatek, the world No3, while Raducanu has gone through seven coaches, including Roig, since her first split with Richardson just after her US Open win.

Raducanu is targeting a comeback to the WTA Tour from a two-month lay-off with a post-viral illness.

It kept her out of the Miami Open, Linz, the Madrid Masters and the Italian Open in Rome in a blighted start to her clay-court swing.

Now, she takes to the French dirt in Strasbourg as a wildcard ahead of this year’s Roland-Garros, where Richardson will oversee her for the first time since her victory in New York.

The 23-year-old’s most recent appearance came in the third round of Indian Wells, where she was beaten by home favourite Amanda Anisimova.

As a result of Raducanu’s absence from the tour, she is set to miss out on a seeding at the French Open, with her now sat as the world No37.
