Calling all BookTokers! The film adaptation of Emily Henry‘s People We Meet on Vacation is about to save the state of rom-coms and become your new obsession, so we’re here to spill all the juicy details.
Netflix announced the official deal with Henry back in August and I have not been able to think about anything else since.
And don’t worry, as an anxious girly myself, I too was worried about how a film adaptation would ruin one of the only books that makes life worth living, but it seems like Henry gets that too.
“I’m always watching my readers, and I want them to be happy. So in my involvement in every single adaptation, my main goal is to represent the readers’ interests,” she said to Variety.
What is People We Meet On Vacation about?
This BookTok fave follows the chaotic friendship between Poppy Wright and Alex Nilsen. Picture this: Poppy is a free-spirited travel junkie, while Alex is the quintessential homebody who’d rather binge-watch something on the couch than explore the world.
For ten years, they’ve taken one week each summer to vacation together — until everything went south during a trip to Croatia that left their friendship hanging by a thread.
Fast forward, and Poppy is living her best life as a travel writer in New York City. Then we hit a existential crisis because New York is not always where dreams are made of and the streets in fact did not make Poppy feel brand new.
After some serious soul-searching, she realises that her happiest moments were spent with Alex, her bestie and the guy who knows her better than anyone else.
So, what does she do? She reaches out to him for one last hurrah in Palm Springs, hoping to rekindle their friendship and maybe sort out some unresolved feelings along the way.
Who is the team behind Emily Henry’s People We Meet On Vacation?
Directed by Brett Haley and adapted by Yulin Kuang, this project has apparently been in the works since October 2022. And let’s just say, I’m getting impatient.
Haley has worked in the rom-com, young adult world before on one of John Green’s Looking for Alaska and All The Bright Places.
Kuang has worked the show Dollface (which was taken from us too soon) and according to her website, “she was once fired from a Hallmark movie for being ‘too hip for Hallmark’.” Go off I guess!
Henry spoke told Variety in March, that the screenplay “has gone through a lot of different drafts” and that she speaks with Haley “at least weekly” for progress updates. We love an involved author!
Who will star in People We Meet On Vacation?
Now let’s talk about the cast. Tom Blyth and Emily Bader are set to play our leads, Alex and Poppy. Blyth, who recently appeared in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, brings his charm to the role of Alex. And Bader, who stunned in the recent My Lady Jane, is the perfect Poppy!
“So now I can tell you our movie-version of Poppy and Alex are Emily Bader and Tom Blyth and they are PERFECT. He’s so stoic, repressed, quietly hilarious. She’s an irresistible rascal with a secret softness,” Henry wrote in her newsletter announcement on August 2nd.
Netflix posted a clip of Bader finding out she would be playing Poppy on X (formerly Twitter) and she had the most wholesome response.
“It’s like a dream come true. We’ll do you proud,” Bader told Henry.
“I’m actually so excited now, the adrenaline — my bones are tingling, I’m so excited.” Same girl, same!
Jameela Jamil, from The Good Place, Lukas Gage of The White Lotus, Emily In Paris’ Lucien Laviscount and Sarah Catherine Hook (who will be in the new season of The White Lotus) are also joining the cast, although their roles are not confirmed.
I’m already obsessed with this group and really hope that it won’t turn into a Don’t Worry Darling or It Ends With Us vibe and they all become best friends forever. No pressure.
What other Emily Henry books are becoming movies?
This rom-com queen is taking over both the big and small screens with five Emily Henry books set to be adapted. Henry’s debut novel Beach Read is getting the movie treatment, with her girl Yulin Kuang adapting it for 20th Century Studios.
Book Lovers and Funny Story are also set to hit theatres, with the author herself taking on screenwriting duties for Funny Story.
And if that wasn’t enough, Happy Place is being turned into a Netflix series, with none other than Jennifer Lopez‘s production company, Nuyorican Productions, at the helm.
People We Meet On Vacation is the only project with a cast attached to it. However, with five adaptations in various stages of development, it looks like we’ll be living in Emily Henry’s world for the foreseeable future. And honestly? I’m not mad about it.
When will People We Meet On Vacation premiere?
Unfortunately, it’s one of those “coming soon” situations and we’re still waiting on a release date. However, we’ll be right here to give you all the updates!
