Emerson College President Jay Bernhardt expressed his acknowledgment and respect for the civic activism and passion that led to the recent protest at the school. The statement came following the clearing of a pro-Palestinian tent encampment on campus, which resulted in numerous arrests on Wednesday night.
Bernhardt highlighted the presence of Emerson staff and administrators at the scene, emphasizing their focus on supporting students during the tense situation and working to de-escalate the conflict. He further mentioned that college officials accompanied the arrested students to police precincts and courthouses, ensuring their support throughout the process and confirming their return to campus upon release.
According to the Boston Police Department, over 100 individuals were arrested, and four police officers sustained injuries during the operation to dismantle the encampment at the Boston liberal arts college.
Bernhardt acknowledged the significant adverse impact of the encampment clearing on the college community. In response, grief counselors were made available on campus to provide support to students on Thursday.
