Emergency services race to scene of serious road accident in Paisley

Witnesses of a road crash in Paisley told how they heard a “hideous thud” as a car overturned near a primary school.

Emergency services raced to Fairway Avenue shortly after 1.30pm following reports of a collision near to Bushes Primary school.

A dark grey Vauxhall Astra could be seen flipped on its side with it’s windows smashed, with police, paramedics and the fire service on the scene.

The male driver of the car was taken to te Royal Alexandra Hospital in the town as a precaution, however police confirmed no one was seriously injured.

Onlookers who witnessed the aftermath of the smash, which is understood to have involved two cars, said it would be a “miracle” if no one was injured.

One man, who said he heard the sounds of the crash before seeing one vehicle with the front “caved in” while the other was overturned in the middle of the road.

The Glenburn resident added: “I didn’t see what happened but all of a sudden this commotion came from outside and it was a hideous thud.

“Then I seen the car on its side and the other all caved in at the front.

“I’m guessing the car coming from the junction just never saw the car on the main road and ploughed straight in.

“It would be a miracle if everyone involved in that walks away without a scratch.

“It was busy outside like it always is at this time of day with folk doing the school run.

“People park their cars along the streets but because of the road works up where the new houses are being built, it can be chaos, especially with it being a busy bus route.

“People appeared from nowhere so it was hard to tell who came from what car but it looked like everybody was okay.”

Two fire engines, an ambulance and a police car all raced to the scene following the collision, with firefighters pictured inspecting the flipped car while the police closed the road.

Parent of pupils at Bushes Primary were contacted and advised to avoid the area when collecting their children from school.

The road was cleared shortly after 3pm, with recovery trucks removing the damaged cars.

It’s understood no action will be taken by police following the collision, which has been deemed an accident.

A spokeswoman from Police Scotland said: “Police were contacted to attend a road traffic collision on Fairway Avenue in Paisley at 1.40pm on January 27.

“Officers attended alongside the Scottish Ambulance Service and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.

“One male driver was taken to hospital as a precaution and drivers involved exchanged details on the scene.”
