Emergency services called to Metrocentre in Gateshead following police incident

Emergency services were called to Metrocentre in Gateshead following an incident at the shopping centre.

Northumbria Police confirmed they were in attendance to a report of a concern for a woman in the venue just before 6pm on Tuesday evening. The North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) was also present as well as appliances from the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service.

A NEAS spokeswoman confirmed a rapid response paramedic and an ambulance were dispatched and that no medical assistance was required as the service was stood down by police.

A witness, who asked not to be named, said: "There was a cornered off part of the Metrocentre. When I asked, the security guards said they can’t let people in the area.

"There were quite a few police officers inside and as I was leaving there were four fire engines outside by the car park. It meant the public couldn't access the train and bus stations and I had to do a lap of the building to get back to my car."

A North East Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "We were called to an incident inside the Metrocentre at 5.42pm this evening.

"We dispatched a rapid response paramedic and an ambulance, but medical assistance was not required and we were stood down on scene by the police."
