Emergency declared as huge wildfire near Marbella causes hotel evacuations

A huge forest fire on the Costa del Sol has led to hotel evacuations and left people fleeing their homes near the popular holiday resort of Marbella.

High temperatures and strong winds in the Malaga province have stoked the blaze, which has been declared a level two emergency by local officials.

The Sun reports that at least three firefighters have been injured while tackling the inferno, including one who suffered 25 per cent burns to their body.

More than 60 people have been evacuated from properties in the Montemayor area of Benahavis, according to reports, with flames and smoke reportedly visible from Marbella.

There are currently 17 firefighting aircraft and 140 firefighters tackling the blaze, which has broken out in the Valle del Genal south of Ronda in the Pujerra municipality.

The regional Andalucian government have asked for the army's emergency unit to be brought in to assist with the crisis.

A leisure centre in Benahavis has been opened up as a temporary shelter for to help those evacuated with nowhere else to go.

Strong winds of up to 25 miles per hour have hampered efforts to control the fire, with crews reporting that flames have been spreading at a rapid rate of 30 metres per minute.

Mayor of Pujerra Francisco Macías said the blaze is affecting an area already devastated by fires last summer.

"It's affected practically the area of the fire last summer," he said in quotes reported by Sur in English.

Andalucia has been on a high alert level for wild fires since the start of the moth due to soaring temperatures.

Last year's fires caused 2,500 homes to be evacuated from six towns across the region.

Among the precautionary measures in place in the area are a ban on barbecues and bonfires, as well as restrictions on motor vehicles in forest areas.

Over 3 million British tourists visited the Andalucia region in 2019, with Malaga, Marbella and Torremolinos among the most popular resorts in the area.
