EA Sports' FIFA 22 TOTY was revealed today, with many Liverpool fans on social media left bemused by Mohamed Salah's omission from the squad.
Salah was Liverpool's standout player in 2021, with the winger still producing world-class goal returns during a tough season for Liverpool last year. Since the start of the 2021/22 season, Salah has arguably been the best player in the world, with the winger playing a vital role in Liverpool's fantastic start to the Premier League and UEFA Champions League campaigns.
The FIFA 22 TOTY was released into FIFA Ultimate Team on Thursday, January 20, 2022 at 15:30 GMT, and there was a negative reaction on social media to Salah not being included.
The FUT TOTY is one of the most anticipated releases in the FIFA calendar, where the best 11 players from world football in 2021 are rewarded with permanently upgraded player items, making them some of the best items in the game.
In 2021, Salah tallied 37 goals and 11 assists in all competitions, with 24 of those goals coming in the Premier League - six more than any other player in that time.
So far this season, Salah has grabbed 16 goals and nine assists in the league along with seven goals in six Champions League appearances, with many fans believing this type of form would see him included in the TOTY.
But when EA announced their TOTY starting XI, there was an uproar of disapproval from Liverpool fans on social media.
As you can see from the reactions, many people disagreed with the decision for Salah to not be included in the TOTY, with PSG's Kylian Mbappe seemingly picked ahead of the Egyptian with Lionel Messi and Robert Lewandowski nailed down to have made the XI.
Kylian Mbappe grabbed 43 goals and 16 assists in 2021, tallying the most goal contributions in the Champions League for 2021 whilst also winning the Nations League with France.
Along with Salah, Liverpool duo Fabinho and Trent Alexander-Arnold were both nominated for the TOTY, but neither made it in the team.
PSG's Achraf Hakimi claimed the right-back spot, whilst the three midfield spots were taken by Man City's Kevin De Bruyne and Chelsea's N'Golo Kante and Jorginho.
Powered by Football, EA SPORTS FIFA 22 brings the game even closer to the real thing with a new season of innovation across every mode and groundbreaking next-gen HyperMotion gameplay technology on PlayStation5 that elevates every moment of the match.
