Elton John's Glastonbury set watched by 7.3million - beating Paul McCartney AND Rolling Stones

Elton John's Glastonbury epic was watched by more than 7.3million people - more that previous headliners Sir Paul McCartney and the Rolling Stones combined.

The music icon brought the house down as he lived lived up to his legendary status with a swansong that enthralled festival-goers on Sunday night.

As Elton, 76, got ready to set down his mic from touring in the UK after 54 years, the historic moment in British music history clearly couldn't be missed.

Almost seven-and-a-half million tuned in to see his last ever performance in England, twice as big a crowd as attracted to any other show on Sunday.

That knocked the socks off many other Glasto headliner greats after 3.9million tuned in for Sir Paul last year and the Stones, who drew an audience average of 2.6million ten years ago.

His headline set on Sunday night on BBC One received the biggest ever overnight audience for a Glastonbury set with a five minute peak overnight audience of 7.6m and average of 7.3 million - a 48.9% share.

Lorna Clarke, BBC Director of Music, confirmed the audience was up 7% on last year across linear television.

She said: “What an incredible way to end this year’s Glastonbury festival!

"Elton John’s set will undoubtedly go down in history as one of the most epic performances ever to light up the Pyramid Stage and was watched by a record 7.6 million people on BBC One.

"I’m so delighted the BBC and our superb teams were able to share every bit of the magic from Worthy Farm during the weekend with audiences at home. People can catch Elton John’s unmissable set and all our other content now on BBC Sounds and BBC iPlayer, which also has over 90 other sets from across the Glastonbury stages.”

As the big clean up is underway, fans are hoping Elton could have a change of heart.

Some have picked up on a potential second thoughts after he addressed the crowd early on.

He said: "Ah wow, I never thought I'd ever play Glastonbury and here I am! It is a very special and emotional night for me because it may be my last show ever in England and Great Britain. So I better play well and I better entertain you. Because you have been standing there so long.

"I really appreciate all the outfits and everything."

It seems the star didn't hang around after his sensational two-hour set.

Speaking on BBC Breakfast this morning Colin Paterson, said: "He [Elton] hit the last note of Rocket Man, jumped in a golf cart with a giant E on it, drove down where an automobile was waiting for him and was whisked to the red gate where there was a helicopter.

"Aviation nerds tracked that helicopter...it took him 39 minutes to get home to Windsor - the queues for the showers at Glastonbury are longer!"

The Tiny Dancer singer teased four stars would sing with him on the Pyramid Stage and was joined by Rina Sawayama, The Killers frontman Brandon Flowers, Jacob Lusk of Gabriels and The London Community Gospel Choir and Stephen Sanchez.

As he took in the rapturous response from his legion of loyal fans, an emotional Elton said: "You make me feel so happy. I want to thank you for 52 years of amazing love and loyalty that you have shown me.

"It’s be an immense journey. I have had the best time, I will never forget you. You are in my head, my heart, and my soul. You have been amazing, an incredible crowd tonight.

"Thank you so much Glastonbury, thank you so much England. I wish you so much health and happiness."
