Before it was a global empire adored by festival-goers and celebrities alike, Aussie label Spell was just two sisters — Isabella and Elizabeth Abegg — handcrafting jewellery and selling bohemian pieces at the Byron Bay artisan markets. Fast-forward to today, and the brand is essentially synonymous with Northern NSW’s free-spirited, sun-drenched aesthetic.
So, when a brand that practically defined the Byron asethetic decides to launch a full outdoor utility line, they don’t look to a distant celebrity ambassador. They look across town to someone who genuinely lives and breathes that exact off-grid lifestyle: long-time friend and local resident, Elsa Pataky.
Spell Adventure Club is a co-designed, transeasonal capsule made for everything from icy ocean plunges to trail hikes, city commutes, and dusty campfires.
A decade-long friendship built on bare feet
While celebrity fashion collaborations often feel like slick, boardroom-approved business deals, Elsa’s tie-up with Spell carries genuine local lore. Over 12 years ago — long before she was co-chairing the Met Gala alongside husband Chris Hemsworth — Elsa walked into the label’s Byron studio, barefoot, shoes in hand, and casually walked out without them.
“We laughed and thought, ‘She’s our people,’” recalls co-founder Elizabeth Abegg in a recent interview with Body+Soul.
Twelve years, shared school runs, and countless worn-out vintage Spell singlets later, the collaboration feels like a natural evolution rather than a campaign. Shot directly on Elsa and Chris’ sprawling North Coast property, the campaign features her actual horses, dogs, and a chaotic supporting cast of farm animals (including three newly adopted goats and a duck named Daisy).
We love the little details
Rather than playing it safe with standard winter wear, the collection leans into a coastal utilitarian vibe sprinkled with Elsa’s personal touches and Spanish heritage:
Key jackets and singlets are stamped with 1976 (Elsa’s birth year) alongside subtle patches reading “strong and free” in her native Spanish. She also has it tattooed on her arm.
Alongside rugged, layerable anoraks and textured knits, there are whimsical touches, like cozy cream socks crowned with giant pom-poms (a detail Elsa jokingly admitted her husband will fail to grasp entirely — mine too, don’t worry.).
Each piece has a live-in-utility feel and was designed to be thrown on and lived in, whether you’re scaling a trail or running errands in town. At its core, Spell Adventure Club x Elsa Pataky is an ode to the wilderness — grounded, practical, and effortlessly cool without taking itself too seriously.
