Elon Musk Tries to Buy His Way Out of a Problem

Twitter finally rolled out an ad-sharing update to its content creators July 13, making good on a promise Elon Musk first made to his users in February.

Faced for the first time with a real Twitter competitor in the form of Mark Zuckerberg's Threads -- which surpassed 100 million users less than a week after its launch -- Elon Musk has been striving to highlight the advantages of Twitter over Threads, namely saying that it is a more balanced platform than the "false happiness" of Meta's platforms.

"Revenue payout to content creators will be cumulative from when I first promised to do so in February," Musk tweeted.

This ad-share revenue will start making its way into the bank accounts of Twitter creators over the next 72 hours, according to an email sent from Twitter and shared by several prominent Twitter accounts.

More Elon Musk:

"We are delighted to share a portion of our ads revenue generated from your Tweets' replies with you," the email reads. "We want to make sure you can benefit from your posts as a Creator, and this is yet another step towards that goal."

Musk teased out the coming possibility of ad sharing June 9, saying at the time that the first block payment will total $5 million. He added that "the creator must be verified and only ads served to verified users count."

Eligibility for this new program, according to a screenshot shared July 12 by Twitter Daily News, hinges on two things: a Twitter Blue subscription and 5(+) million tweet impressions each month for the last three months.

Since the announcement, Twitter has begun sending ad share revenue to Creators. The largest payout thus far has been to @Billym2k, an account with 2.1 million followers who received $37,050.

Brian Krassenstein, with around 750,000 followers on the platform, shared that he is receiving just under $25,000.
