Elon Musk argued on Saturday that building a durable human foothold on Mars could act as a buffer against Earth-origin threats, from lethal outbreaks to hostile AI, because distance and travel time create built-in barriers.
Musk also tied that survival logic to a much broader promise made at Space Exploration Technologies Corp.’s (NASDAQ:SPCX) IPO event last month, where he said that the company wants to be able to take anyone beyond Earth rather than keeping deep-space travel limited to astronauts and the ultra-wealthy.
