Elon Musk's X to dispute child exploitation fine

Elon Musk-owned social media platform X has asked a court to review a federal regulator fine of more than $600,000 for its compliance failures in dealing with child sexual exploitation material.

Federal Court filings show the company, formerly known as Twitter, initiated the action last week in a bid to test the legality of the eSafety Commissioner's penalty.

"X Corp. has lodged proceedings seeking judicial review of decisions of the eSafety Commissioner in this matter," a spokesperson for the online watchdog said on Thursday, adding it did not comment on legal proceedings.

The commissioner's office levied the $610,500 penalty last month for X's failure to address a set of questions on its approach to handling child abuse content on its platform.

The US-based company was given 28 days to respond or pay the fine after the commissioner in February used new powers to force several tech companies to share details about their processes for dealing with the material.

X failed "to provide any response to some questions" on how it was tackling child sexual abuse material, the eSafety Commissioner said at the time.

While X was fined, tech giant Google was handed a formal warning for a lack of transparency, with both companies accused of failing to adequately respond to a number of questions.

ESafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant described the tech giants' actions at the time as disappointing "as the questions relate to the protection of children and the most egregious forms of online harm".

X did not immediately respond to an AAP request for comment on the court proceedings.
