A new poll has revealed that Tesla (TSLA) and Twitter owner Elon Musk is now the most popular political figure in the United States, ahead of former President Donald Trump and current President Joe Biden.
The poll was conducted by The Harris Poll and HarrisX from May 17-18, 2023, among 2,004 registered voters.

The poll found that 47% of respondents had a favorable view of Musk, and 33% had an unfavorable opinion. In second place was Trump, with a 46% favorable rating and a 47% unfavorable rating.
In third place was Florida governor Ron DeSantis, at 45% and 37% favorable/unfavorable. He is followed by Senator Bernie Sanders with a 42% rating for favorable and unfavorable. And rounding out the top five is Biden at 42% favorable and 52% unfavorable.
At the very bottom of the list is Presidential candidate Mariane Williamson at 16% favorable and 23% unfavorable, and Vladimir Putin, President of Russia, with a 13% favorable rating and a 72% unfavorable rating.
Some other interesting findings in the poll include:
- Less than a third of respondents believe the country is “on the right track.”
- Two-thirds of respondents believe that the economy is heading in the right direction, and the strength of the economy is perceived at below 50%.
- Only 21% of respondents believe the US will be able to avoid a recession.
- President Biden’s approval rating has stayed at about 40% for the past few months, and the GOP’s approval rating is down to 47% this month, which is tied with the Democratic Party as a whole.
- Price increases and inflation were the respondents' chief concerns at 34%, followed by immigration at 27%. The economy ranked number three with 25% calling it their chief concern. In fourth and fifth place were guns (according to 22% respondents) and the national debt/federal budget deficits at 20%.
- Most respondents believe that neither Trump nor Biden should run for President again. About 38% of respondents believe Biden should run again and 62% believe he should not; 46% of respondents believe Trump should run again and 54% believe he should not. That said, 52% of respondents believe Trump will win the nomination and 48% believe he will not.
The results of the survey “were weighted for age within gender, region, race/ethnicity, marital status, household size, income, employment, education, political party, and political ideology where necessary to align them with their actual proportions in the population. Propensity score weighting was also used to adjust for respondents’ propensity to be online.”
