Elon Musk has deleted one of his own tweets spreading a bizarre conspiracy theory about the Pelosi home invasion that left the husband of the Speaker of the House in hospital.
The new owner of Twitter shared an article from a website known for spreading false information — most notoriously that Hillary Clinton had died in the September 11 attacks and been replaced by a body double.
Commenting under a post by Mrs Clinton about the attack on Paul Pelosi, Musk wrote: “There is a tiny possibility there might be more to this story than meets the eye.”
Suspected attacker David DePape, a known believer in conspiracy theories, was arrested after reportedly confronting the speaker's husband as he stormed into the couple's home and shouted "where is Nancy?"
Mrs Clinton had shared a LA Times article about DePape, along with the message: "The Republican Party and its mouthpieces now regularly spread hate and deranged conspiracy theories.
"It is shocking, but not surprising, that violence is the result. As citizens, we must hold them accountable for their words and the actions that follow."
Musk commented on Sunday morning at around 8.15am, but had deleted the tweet by the afternoon. In the meantime it had wracked up tens of thousands of likes and retweets.
San Francisco police released a statement debunking the claims made within the article, clarifying Mr Pelosi and suspect DePape did not know each other before the incident.
Officers arrived at the Pacific Heights home after being alerted by Mr Pelosi of the intruder breaking in at 2.27 am on Friday October 28.
On arrival at the San Francisco home they saw the incident had escalated with the intruder and Mr Pelosi grappling for a hammer.
As officers crossed the room, the attacker allegedly wrestled the weapon off the 82-year-old victim and struck him over the head.
Although needing surgery, he is expected to make a full recovery.
Since the attack numerous conspiracy theories have been conjured up giving a false narrative of the events.
Since the suspect's arrest, details about DePape's life have been revealed.
He grew up in Powell River, British Columbia, before moving to California around 20 years ago because of a romantic relationship, his stepfather Gene DePape told CNN.
The next time his name surfaced was when he was living in a three-bed flat with nudist activist Oxan 'Gypsy' Taub, her fiance Jaymz Smith and her three children. It was part of a San Francisco Chronicle look into the bizarre living setup.
DePape, who was described in the article as a 'hemp jewellery maker', had been asked to be the best man at the couple's wedding.
In 2021 Taub was found guilty of 20 counts of criminal behaviour from felony charges of stalking to attempted child abduction. The 50-year-old became obsessed with a 14-year-old boy which escalated to his attempted abduction.
At one point DePape was a Green Party supporter and took to the streets as a nudist activist, protesting restrictions on public nudity.
More recently, David lived a life peddling conspiracy theories and posting bizarre blog posts with titles such as 'Communist Voodoo Science' and 'The Woke are racists with a guilty conscience'
His Wordpress blog has been suspended since the attack.
