President-elect Donald Trump has announced that Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy will lead the Department of Government Efficiency, a new initiative aimed at eliminating government waste. This move has drawn criticism from Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who suggested that having two leaders for the department may not be the most efficient approach.
Trump stated that Musk and Ramaswamy will play key roles in streamlining government operations, cutting unnecessary spending, and restructuring federal agencies. The department, known as 'DOGE,' will work in collaboration with the White House and Office of Management & Budget to drive significant structural reforms.
Musk has encouraged public participation by inviting suggestions on areas that could be trimmed down. He emphasized that all actions taken by the Department of Government Efficiency will be transparent and open to public scrutiny. Musk also mentioned plans to create a leaderboard highlighting instances of wasteful government spending, aiming to engage the public in identifying and addressing such issues.
Ramaswamy, who previously endorsed Trump and withdrew from the GOP presidential race, expressed the department's intention to crowdsource examples of government waste, fraud, and abuse. He emphasized the need for comprehensive government reform and the importance of involving the American public in the process.
Warren, however, raised concerns about Trump's choice of Pete Hegseth for the role of Defense Secretary, questioning his qualifications for the position. Despite differing opinions on the appointments, the establishment of the Department of Government Efficiency signals a significant step towards enhancing government accountability and efficiency under the incoming administration.
