Wildlife seized from traders in southern Sumatra faces a second challenge after rescue. Many animals recover and return to the forest, but others arrive with injuries or habits that make release impossible, and for years the region has had few places able to keep them. JAAN, the Indonesian wildlife nonprofit whose name stands for Jakarta Animal Aid Network, has worked on that gap, and its website calls the south of Sumatra the main hub for wildlife crime. Ellis Park’s website records that in 2021 Warren Ellis, an Australian musician, bought land next to one of JAAN’s rescue centers and donated it so that animals that could not be released would have a permanent home. The donation was named Ellis Park.
