Elliot Anderson 'set to' turn his back on Scotland

Elliot Anderson won't be returning to the Scotland fold, according to a report.

The 20-year-old has seemingly decided that he rushed into his decision to pick Scotland over England.

The Newcastle midfielder was last month called into Steve Clarke's Scotland squad for the recent games against Cyprus and England in September.

However, he pulled out of the camp after only a couple of training sessions. The Scottish FA cited injury reasons for this move, as he returned to the north east of England.

But according to the Scottish Daily Express, the English-born player simply didn't enjoy his time with the Scotland national team and very quickly had the feeling it wasn't for him.

The report states that Anderson will be fit and available to take on Brentford in Newcastle's next Premier League fixture this weekend.

Scotland have been chasing Anderson for some time, hoping to pip England to securing his international allegiances.

Clarke had tried on several occasions to call him up before he finally got his wish.

It's said that Anderson had spoken with Clarke and Newcastle officials before giving it a go.

Born in Whitley Bay, Anderson qualifies for Scotland through his grandmother. He represented Scotland up to under-21 level, although did switch to England at U19s.

Gareth Southgate earlier this week admitted Anderson is a player he and the FA are keen on.

The England boss said: "We liked him and we do like him. He’s a player that’s doing really well. Obviously, he was called into their squad earlier in the week and I don’t know what the position is at the moment. I saw he’s pulled out.

"Let’s see - that’s something that others at our organisation will be picking up. He’s definitely a player we like.”

Clarke countered that by claiming. He said: "We like the player as well so Elliot will still have that choice to make.”

This report goes on to state that Anderson does not wish to be considered for Scotland's Euro 2024 qualifier against Spain next month, nor the friendly with France.

Clarke is also hoping to draft his Newcastle teammate Harvey Barnes into the Scotland picture. Again, Southgate has not given up hope on the former England youth international, but the winger is also eligible to play for Scotland and is looking at the options available to him.
