Ellen Pompeo Transforms Her Bathroom With Hammam-Inspired Arches, Ornate Mosaics, and Moroccan Details for a Timeless Spa-Like Escape

Ellen pompeo on a gray background.

Whether it's a luxurious marble bathroom or a slick shower space covered head to toe in zeillage tiles, some styles never date. In fact, there are plenty of classic bathroom looks, but one style has stood the test of time the longest – and it almost always transports me to a place of tranquil serenity.

Magical and historic, Moroccan-style bathrooms are filled with characterful details, be it intricate tiling or ornate architecture. While I've long loved the look, when I saw Ellen Pompeo's dreamy hammam-inspired spa, I became sure that the style was one worth taking inspiration from.

Designed by interior designer to the stars Martyn Lawrence Bullard, it's no wonder Ellen's space is a masterpiece. From the impressive architecture to the mosaic tiles (much like these glass wall & floor tiles from Wayfair), I have never envied a bathroom more.

Ellen's hamam-inspired bathroom is undeniably chic. Featuring arched alcoves and mosaic tiling, it's undoubtedly influenced by Moorish design. The architecture of the space is, of course, impressive, but it's the little details that make the space even more magical and spa-like.

There are plenty of bathrooms inspired by travel, but the Moroccan style trumps them all. Ellen's space features layers of intricate details, proving that nothing beats this ornate and deeply lavish style.

Drenched in wood from head to toe, the material brings a seamless and pared-back simplicity to the room. The arched alcoves create drama and visual interest, nodding to the Moroccan theme. To contrast with the wood, a washing station sits at the center of the room. Featuring a wall of silver mosaic bathroom tiles, the nook is the perfect statement focal point, bringing a hint of luxury and glamour.

Hannah Griffiths, Founder and Interior Designer of Studio Palindrome, says, 'I love the relative simplicity of this space. Martyn incorporates the classic Moorish arches but keeps the design disciplined, letting Turkish marble envelope the space. The mirrored mosaic tiles are the star– throwing light through the space like a disco ball. It’s typical Martyn Lawrence Bullard: historical reference with Hollywood charisma.'

She adds, 'For anyone wanting to create this look at home, the key is introducing Moorish forms in some way. If architectural changes aren’t realistic, a Moroccan-style mirror in that signature arch silhouette can create the look. Layering in Moroccan lighting or artisanal mosaics adds to the authenticity. If a more contemporary is your style, then cladding a walk-in shower in continuous natural stone slabs can deliver the same cocooned, sanctuary-like atmosphere without leaning heavily on the Turkish or Moroccan ornamentation.'

Ellen's hammam-inspired bathroom is a work of art. From the arched alcoves to the wooden surfaces, it's a unique design that takes inspiration from traditional Moroccan architecture – with a contemporary twist.
