Elis James brilliantly claps back at man who downplays Wales' World Cup heartbreak

Welsh comedian, Elis James, has hit back at a social media user's comment which downplayed the heartbreak of Wales' play-off defeat. On Tuesday evening, Wales' dreams of a historic World Cup qualification ended in heartbreak in Zurich thanks to a late Swiss goal in extra time.

Favourites Switzerland played host to Gemma Grainger's side in the World Cup play-off final on October 11. This was the first time the Welsh visitors had progressed this far in their bid to qualify for a first major tournament.

The 2-1 extra-time defeat will be all the more gut-wrenching given Wales were just moments from taking it to a decisive penalty shootout. In response, comedian Elis James said on Twitter that he was in disbelief over the outcome of the final minute of extra time but said he was "so proud" of the team.

He tweeted: "The final minute of extra time. I can’t believe this. This is right up there with Russia 2003, Romania ‘93, Scotland ‘85, etc. The final fucking minute. So proud of them, and they’ve changed Welsh sport forever. But the *final minute of extra time*".

One Twitter user disagreed with the comedian's comments, responding with: "It’s not really right up there with those moments is it?" But the comedian was quick to hit back at the man's comments and sarcastically replied: "Losing in added time of extra time?

"The 121st minute, in a World Cup play off? The focus, attention and funding qualifying would have brought to football for women and girls in Wales would have been utterly game changing. It would changed everything. But no, you’re probably right".

Thankfully, many agreed with the comedian's initial response to the game. Twitter user, Patrick Jones, said: "I bet there are thousands of girls right now who will be unafraid to walk on the pitch and inspired to start playing the beautiful game tomorrow. Ymlaen".

Stephen Baker tweeted: "They have helped changed the country not just sport. There will be kids kicking a ball around getting exercise because of them which is good for the country". While Kylie Webster replied with: "Heartbreaking! But they should be so proud of the legacy they have already created. To see so many young girls inspired by them is just incredible!"
