Elina Svitolina signalled her French Open ambitions by battling past world number four Coco Gauff to win her third Italian Open title, eight years after her last.

The Ukrainian triumphed 6-4 6-7(3) 6-2 in Saturday’s final to lift her first clay-court title of the season and add her name to the mix of contenders for Roland Garros.
