Cold storage company Lineage Inc. found elevated levels of ammonia in the area surrounding its Los Angeles warehouse in the weeks after it burned in a massive fire. The readings were buried in fine print on the company’s website.
The giant warehouse that burned for eight days in mid-June in the Boyle Heights neighborhood of L.A. had used thousands of pounds of anhydrous ammonia to cool the facility.
Anhydrous ammonia is a common refrigerant used in cold storage warehouses. A toxic gas, it can cause respiratory irritation if it leaks. In large doses, it can lead to lung and eye damage and even death.
