Electricity expert says adding €3 item to your dryer could save you 20% on bills

The cost of electricity continues to rise for customers across Ireland as most providers continue to announce price hikes on their services.

With that in mind, many households are searching the internet to find tips and tricks to cut costs and make their money go further.

One electricity expert, Colm Griffin, from purchase.ie took to social media recently to share a great and easy trick that will save time and energy.

The tumble dryer is one of the biggest electricity costs for a household, but many of us can't live without it - particularly now that the rainy season is kicking off.

Mr. Griffin explains that by adding dryer balls - which you can buy from the likes of Homestore and More for €3 - to each cycle, you can cut costs quickly and effectively.

In a short video posted to TikTok, Colm said: "Tumble dryers typically use about a euro an hour when they're on.

"But these a dryer balls, and you put them in with your laundry. Instead of the clothes getting stuck together, this helps to separate the clothes and distribute them around the tumble dryer better.

"This means the clothes are able to dry faster. They can reduce drying time by up to 20%. So for every hour you use your tumble dryer, you could be saving up to 20c an hour."

Tumble dryer balls provide a range of benefits to help you make drying your laundry more cost-effective, energy-efficient and eco-friendly.

These benefits include:

  • Reducing drying time
  • Shortened drying time saves energy, making laundry less costly
  • Eco-friendly due to lower energy use
  • Reduced static and lint build up, as well as a reduction in creases and wrinkles
  • No more need for artificial chemicals
  • Re-usable, saving you money on fabric softeners

Depending on your tumble dryer, the average cost of running one for a year can range from €77 to €232. This means if you save up to 20%, you could shave anywhere from €15 to €46 off your annual costs. Every little helps!
