Electric Picnic warning as Met Eireann gives grim forecast

Met Eireann advises those travelling to Stradbally to bring their rain gear as over 80,000 are expected to attend Electric Picnic during a weekend of unpredictable weather.

The weather forecast for the weekend is mixed, as dry and sunny spells coupled with wet conditions coincide with the music festival. Thursday will be mostly dry for arriving festival goers, with chances of light showers later tonight.

Friday will start off with warm sunshine but the weather may give way to heavy showers by mid afternoon. Met Eireann’s Joanna Donnelly told people spending the majority of the weekend outdoors to keep an eye on the forecast, as windy conditions were likely.

“Saturday, Sunday and Monday we've got [what] is called dumb belling lows to areas of low-pressure circling around each other, bringing rain and strong winds through the weekend,” the meteorologist said on RTÉ.

However, music lovers can pin some hope on Saturday and Sunday afternoon, which the national forecast suggests will be warm and sunny. Average temperatures across both afternoons could potentially hit 17℃.

This weekend marks the long anticipated return of Electric Picnic after a three year hiatus due to Covid-19. The line up for this year has been praised by many, with acts such as Tame Impala, Snow Patrol, Arctic Monkeys, The Kooks and Dermot Kennedy gracing the stage.

The festival has also made headlines following news that a major drug testing service would be available on site for the first time. Festival goers can anonymously submit drugs into a “surrender bin,”, which will be tested for potent substances. The trial was set up to tackle bad batches of drugs that are often reported at music festivals. However, the HSE has stated that the trial will not protect individual using illegal substances from being prosecuted if they are caught by law enforcement.
