Floral tributes have begun arriving at the site of a house fire that killed an elderly mother and her son, devastating a Queensland community.

The woman in her 80s and the man in his 60s died in the blaze south of Brisbane on Sunday night.

Mourners later began delivering flowers at the Woodridge site, with Deputy Premier Cameron Dick among those paying their respects on Monday.

Emergency services found the Cypress St residence engulfed in flames when they arrived about 6pm on Sunday.

"Despite efforts of all crews, two people who were inside the house at the time... died at the scene," police said.

Woodridge MP Mr Dick dropped off flowers on Monday, saying he knew the elderly woman well.

"She's a wonderful person, she had become very unwell in her later years," he told reporters.

"She'd been very helpful to me as a local member of parliament. She'd been very supportive of me personally."

Mr Dick said the tragedy was a "terrible blow for the community".

"You had a son caring for his mother and that they would both lose their lives in these terrible circumstances," he said.

Police are investigating the cause of the fire and are asking anyone with information to contact them.
