An elderly woman has died, and four other people have been hospitalised after a horror crash outside Scone on Friday afternoon, October 4.

Police say the 76-year-old passenger of a Mitsubishi Lancer died at the scene on Bunnan Road about 22 kilometres west of Scone after the vehicle in which she was travelling collided with a Nissan Navarra carrying a man and woman in their 20s.

Two other women, aged 53 and 39 - the driver of the Lancer and a second passenger - were flown to hospital just after 4pm. The younger man and woman in the other car were similarly rushed to hospital for treatment.

Hunter Valley police say the Lancer was travelling north at Owens Gap and had failed to negotiate a right-hand bend when it collided with the ute. Both drivers have undergone mandatory testing, police said, as officers attached to Hunter and Mid North Coast Crash Investigation Units continue to investigate the crash.

A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.

The details of this report are developing. It will be updated.
