Elderly man stuck in mud for two days after coming off tractor dies in Sunshine Coast hospital

A 95-year-old farmer who survived more than two days trapped in mud after coming off his tractor has died in hospital.

A friend went to check on Tom Killen last week after not hearing from him for two days, and discovered him by a dam on his Carters Ridge property in south-east Queensland.

Emergency services crews arrived on the property at 7am on Tuesday where they found Mr Killen covered "head-to-toe" in mud.

Queensland Ambulance Service operations supervisor Shaun Bright said at the time that Mr Killen was suffering from suspected hypothermia and severe dehydration.

Mr Killen was taken by ambulance in a critical condition to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital, about an hour's drive away.

Neighbour Simon Martin said at the time that he believed Mr Killen was investigating an irrigation leak on his property.

"Apparently there was a water leak in the irrigation pipes … so he must have ventured up [there] and it got too hard for him.

"All older people deserve better. There's not enough care for them."

Mr Killen remained in hospital in a critical condition for several days but police today confirmed he died over the weekend.

A report is being prepared for the coroner.
