Elderly couple's year-long nightmare after Covid rules forced them to abandon £1k holiday

An elderly couple were forced to abandon their first holiday abroad in three years after discovering the night before they were due to fly that Covid restrictions had changed. Alan and Pearl Osborne are still more than £1,000 out of pocket over a year since their holiday hell, which saw them forced to drop their plans while their bags were packed and ready to go.

The pair decided to treat themselves to a holiday in Lanzarote in November 2021 after avoiding travel abroad during the pandemic. But the night before they were due to fly out from Newcastle, they discovered the rules for re-entry after their break had been changed and that they would require a Day 2 PCR test and to self-isolate until they received a negative test.

This wouldn't have been possible for Alan, 76, who had an important medical appointment to go to two days after he was due to land back in the UK, TeessideLive reports. Alan, who had chemotherapy for a rare incurable form of non-Hodgkins lymphoma called Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia, was classed as extremely vulnerable.
