Leveling up your character by upgrading stats is crucial in Elden Ring, as you'll need to raise your HP, stamina, damage, and other attributes to succeed against the game's difficult enemies and bosses. However, it's not uncommon for many players to either make a mistake while upgrading their stats or decide that they want to go for a different build entirely midway through their playthrough. When this happens, being able to reallocate all of the stat points you've earned and used by leveling is incredibly helpful.
This process is commonly known as "respecing," and thankfully, Elden Ring allows you to respec your character's stats after you've made a certain amount of progress and have acquired a special item. In this guide, we'll go over everything you need to know about respecing in Elden Ring, including how to unlock the ability to respec and which rare item you'll need to do so.
How to respec your stats in Elden Ring
To unlock the ability to respec your stats in Elden Ring, you'll need to defeat the boss Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon. She's located at the end of the Academy of Raya Lucaria, which is the Legacy Dungeon found in the north area of the Liurnia of the Lakes region. She's a tough boss who constantly uses magic spells and Spirit Ash Summons, so prepare for lots of strafing and dodging between your attack windows. We also recommend equipping your best magic-resistant armor for improved protection.
Once you defeat Rennala, she will offer you a chance at "rebirth," which is what will allow you to reallocate all of the stat points your character previously gained from leveling (you cannot change the stats of your starting class). However, there's a catch — to do this, you'll need to give her a Larval Tear, which is an exceedingly rare item.
To find Larval Tears, you'll need to find and hunt down enemies that mimic the form of other creatures in Elden Ring's open world. These are usually creatures like Grafted Scions or Lion Guardians that are roughly as difficult to take down as a miniboss. There aren't many of them located throughout the game, but each one you kill is guaranteed to drop a Larval Tear. One location we know of is in the Liurnia of the Lakes, and is shown above. A Grafted Scion is disguised as a wandering giant crayfish; kill it to reveal the Grafted Scion's true form, then kill it again to obtain a Larval Tear. There are also several Larval Tears in the Nokron, Eternal City area.
Elden Ring is finally here, and it's available for $60 on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, and PC. It's one of the best Xbox games you can play right now if you're a fan of challenging RPGs, and we strongly recommend it.
