'Elden Ring' and 'The Duskbloods': Hidetaka Miyazaki Explains His Fascination With Hands and Feet

Hidetaka Miyazaki has built some of gaming's most mysterious worlds. His games are filled with fallen kingdoms, strange monsters, cryptic characters, and stories that rarely explain themselves.

As the president of FromSoftware and the director behind "Elden Ring" and "The Duskbloods," Miyazaki has become known for this distinctive style. His games often explore destruction, rebirth, despair, hope, and human desire.

But there is another detail that fans keep noticing: hands.

And, surprisingly often, feet.

Why Are Hands So Common in Miyazaki's Games?

Hands have appeared in several memorable moments across Miyazaki's games. "Elden Ring," for instance, features the disturbing Fingercreepers. These giant, crawling hands can emerge from the ground and catch players off guard.

They are difficult to forget.

The Duskbloods also puts noticeable emphasis on hands. Its opening cinematic features one hand reaching toward another. The image is simple, but it immediately raises questions about what it represents.

In a recent interview with The Guardian, Miyazaki was asked about his repeated use of hand imagery. His answer was less definitive than some fans might expect.

Miyazaki explained that he does not necessarily notice these recurring motifs while he is creating his games. He suggested, however, that they could be connected to his interest in expressing parts of human existence that are difficult to describe with words.

Somehow, this interpretation makes sense. Hands can symbolize many things. They can represent connection, power, control, creation, vulnerability, or violence.

In a FromSoftware game, though, they can also simply mean danger is about to grab you.

What About the Bare Feet?

Then there is the feet question.

For years, fans have joked about Miyazaki's supposed fascination with feet. Barefoot characters appear frequently across his games, and some scenes give their feet an unusual amount of visual attention.

The internet, naturally, developed its own theories.

According to Kotaku, Miyazaki has said he is unsure where the rumor about his interest in feet originally came from. He did not confirm the idea as a personal fixation.

Instead, his explanation points toward the same creative principle behind his other unusual visual choices. His games often use physical details to communicate things that dialogue cannot easily explain.

That leaves plenty of room for interpretation.

The Strange Visual Language of FromSoftware

This ambiguity is a major part of Miyazaki's appeal.

A strange creature, object, or body part might have a deeper meaning. Yet the game rarely gives players a straightforward answer.

The giant hands in "Elden Ring" demonstrate this perfectly. Players can interpret them as symbols of something larger. But when one suddenly crawls toward you, the immediate concern is simply staying alive.

The combination of symbolism and horror is what makes Miyazaki's games so memorable.

Whether the recurring hands and bare feet are deliberate motifs or simply products of Miyazaki's creative instincts, they have become part of the visual language associated with his work.

And perhaps that is the real appeal. Miyazaki does not always tell players what an image means.

He gives them something strange to look at, something unsettling to remember, and just enough mystery to make them keep asking questions.
