West End star Elaine Paige has addressed rumours she could be the celebrity underneath Knitting on The Masked Singer.
The 74-year-old appeared on the Thursday morning instalment of Good Morning Britain with co-hosts Kate Garraway and Ben Shephard.
The musical theatre star was quizzed on the possibility she is underneath the extravagant ITV singing competition costume after Knitting performed the Cats track Memories.
In the first week of the show, Knitting ended up in the bottom three with their performance of Remember by Becky Hill. However, with Chris Kamara as Ghost heading home, they lived to sing another song.
Host Kate asked Elaine: “There’s a rumour circulating that you are Knitting because the person sung Memories from Cats, which is your song.”
Yet Elaine remained coy as she replied saying she ‘couldn’t say’ either way, adding: “You don’t want to give the game away. I couldn’t possibly say.”
Tipping Point host Ben then asked the West End star if she was a fan of knitting as a hobby.
Smiling, Elaine replied: “Well I've had a go at the odd pearl of play in my day. The clicking of the needles. I don’t know, Ben.”
Ben replied: “You do research before you do parts, so that sounds like you’ve done the research on knitting.”
Again refusing to confirm or deny the rumours, Elaine said: “Well, I can’t say anymore really. I think we better leave it there.”
However, several other fans have been left convinced that they had recognised the voice of Knitting as singer Claire Richards from pop group Steps – particularly after the star posted a big clue before the show.
The songstress took to social media to share a short video of her doing some crafting, with an assortment of brightly coloured shapes scattered across the table.
She captioned it: "Happy Saturday! This is where I’ll be for the foreseeable”
Many have speculated the colourful character is Claire Richards from Steps and this may have sealed the deal.
In her The Masked Singer videotape, Knitting had a Lancastrian accent and hinted at a connection with the world of theatre.
The character described themselves as being like a ‘big warm hello and cuddle’, promising ‘not to string you along’.
Knitting's final riddle was: “Knitting is easy, it's the crossing of sticks. Count all of your stitches, there should 26.”
The Masked Singer returns to ITV1 this weekend.
