El-Sayed trolls Rogers with a retro-style game over Dallas GOP convention appearance: ‘Help Mike Rogers find his way from Florida back to Michigan’

Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed has launched a new retro-style video game aimed at trolling his Republican opponent, former Rep. Mike Rogers. The game, titled Come Home, Mike, features a cartoon version of Rogers on a boat and challenges players to help him navigate from Florida back to Michigan.

The start screen features Rogers’s face on a cartoon body standing on a boat in the water. The text on the screen reads, “Help Mike Rogers find his way from Florida back to Michigan,” followed by the parenthetical remark, “(He hasn’t managed it yet).” The instructions tell the player to “drag Mike’s yacht” and “answer three questions to unlock the doors home.”

Once you start the game, you find yourself in Cape Coral, Florida, represented by a pixelated sandy beach and a palm tree. The goal is to move the boat through a water maze until you reach a football field in Michigan. Rogers has accused El-Sayed of being against the sport, while El-Sayed has challenged Rogers to a tackle football game instead of a standard debate. El-Sayed claims that Rogers is actively ducking that challenge.

Football has somehow become a contentious issue in this senate race

The game mechanics include roadblocks where the player must choose between a “yes” and a “no” option. Curiously, the “yes” option is never actually available for the player to select. One of the prompts asks, “Mike, Michiganders are really struggling with the cost of prescription drugs. Will you agree to vote to lower prescription drug prices when you get to the Senate?”

After you navigate past the final roadblock, you find that the path to the Michigan endpoint is restricted. Instead, the game directs the player to the GOP midterm convention in Dallas. Rogers is scheduled to speak at that convention on Thursday evening. El-Sayed has made his feelings about his opponent’s residency clear before. Just last month, he told the former representative, “If you want to be a Florida man, go be a Florida man.”

This appearance comes at a time when other Republicans in competitive Senate races are opting to skip the event. These absences are happening amid President Donald Trump’s slumping approval ratings, the ongoing Iran war, and a recent surge for Democrats on the generic congressional ballot.

The Rogers campaign did not stay quiet about the game. In a statement shared on Thursday, October 19, the campaign responded to the taunt. “while [El-Sayed] plays games, we’ll keep talking to Michiganders,” the statement read. They added, “We’ve got a state to save.”
